Amazon Prime Day 2026: A Tech Buying Strategy
Prime Day has matured. We break down the categories Amazon actually discounts, the fake-deal pattern, and how to decide between Prime Day and Black Friday in 2026.
Prime Day has gotten old. The event Amazon launched in 2015 to celebrate its 20th anniversary now generates more revenue in four days than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined ($24.1 billion in July 2025 alone, per Adobe Analytics). It has spawned a fall sibling (Prime Big Deal Days), forced Walmart, Target, and Best Buy to run counter-events, and become the second-largest discount window of the year. What it has not done is stay honest. The headline discount percentages keep climbing while the real, beat-the-street-price savings cluster in a much narrower set of categories than the marketing implies. Here is what the data actually says about Prime Day 2026, and how we’d shop it.

The pattern in one sentence: anything Amazon makes is genuinely cheap, anything Amazon sells is usually not.
Why Amazon’s first-party hardware is the one honest category
Amazon does not sell Echo speakers, Fire TV sticks, Ring doorbells, eero routers, or Kindle e-readers to make hardware margin. They sell them at near-zero margin (or, in some cases, below cost) to lock customers into the Prime ecosystem, Alexa voice queries, and Amazon’s ad inventory. The hardware is a customer-acquisition channel. Every Echo Dot sold at $22 produces years of grocery orders, Prime Video views, and ad impressions worth far more than the lost $30 of MSRP.
This is the only reason the Prime Day discounts on these products are real. When Amazon drops Echo Auto to $14.99 (73% off) or eero Max 7 multi-packs by $700, it is not running theater. It is paying for ecosystem expansion out of the marketing budget, and it accounts for the price by category in its filings. The discount is structural, not promotional.
The implication: if you have been waiting on a first-time smart home build, Prime Day is the single best window of the year to grab the Amazon-side of it. The exact same Echo Show 8 will be the same price (or $5 different) on Black Friday, but the supply is deeper and the bundle deals more aggressive in July. We have tracked this for six years running. Echo, Fire TV, Ring, eero, and Kindle hit their real annual lows on Prime Day roughly 80% of the time.
Note one important exception. Amazon’s Blink line, which it acquired in 2017, often goes deeper on Black Friday because Blink competes more directly with Wyze and TP-Link on price-sensitive segments, and the November event matters more for that customer. If you want Blink specifically, wait.
The “false deal” pattern, and why it’s getting worse
Outside the Amazon first-party line, Prime Day discounts are increasingly performative. The mechanic is simple. A third-party seller raises the list price on a product two to four weeks before the event, lets Amazon’s algorithm settle the new “MSRP” into the system, then offers a 40% discount off the inflated number on Prime Day. The actual transaction price is the same as it was in April. Gizmodo documented a digital projector advertised as 32% off at $249 during a recent Prime Day, where the price had been jacked from $249 to $900 about two weeks before the event, then “discounted” back to $249. The percentage off was real. The savings were zero.
This is not anecdotal. In October 2024 a proposed class action was filed against Amazon alleging the company “relied on fictional list prices” during Prime Day to exaggerate the percentage-off framing. The suit cites internal data showing a meaningful share of advertised Prime Day deals had no real discount versus the 90-day pre-event price. Amazon is fighting it. The pattern persists.
There are two ways to protect yourself, and both take less than thirty seconds. Install Keepa or CamelCamelCamel as a browser extension. Both overlay a 12-month price-history chart directly on the Amazon product page. If the chart shows the current Prime Day price was already the regular price in March, the deal is not a deal. If the chart shows a flat line at $899 for ten months and then a drop to $649 for the event, that is a real discount. The signal is unambiguous and the tools are free. We treat any Prime Day purchase over $50 as requiring a Keepa check first, full stop.
The 2024 lawsuit also called out the related “was/now” UI pattern where Amazon displays a strikethrough “list price” that was never the actual selling price. Browser extensions catch this in real time. If you skip the price-history step, assume the percentage is rounded up by 10 to 20 points.
When to buy on Prime Day vs wait until Black Friday
We pulled Adobe Analytics’ category-level discount data across Prime Day July 2025 and Black Friday 2025 and the gap is large and consistent. Some categories Amazon genuinely commits to on Prime Day. Others it saves for the bigger November event because the foot-traffic and competitive dynamics are different.
Buy on Prime Day: Amazon first-party hardware (Echo, Fire TV, Ring, eero, Kindle), Blink and Ring bundles, Matter-compatible smart plugs and bulbs from Kasa and TP-Link, basic accessories (cables, chargers, batteries from AmazonBasics and Anker), Amazon-published books and Kindle subscriptions.
Wait for Black Friday: TVs (18% Prime Day vs 24%+ Black Friday on average), laptops and desktops (13% vs 19%), large kitchen appliances (17% vs 25%), robot vacuums (20 to 30% vs 40 to 50%), Apple hardware (Apple discounts more aggressively at Target and Best Buy in November, and barely participates in Prime Day at all).
Either works: Smart home accessories that aren’t first-party Amazon, headphones (Bose and Sony price-match across both events), gaming peripherals, fitness wearables.
Skip both: Premium kitchen appliances (KitchenAid, Vitamix; cheaper in January), current-gen iPhones and iPads (best in March), winter coats (better at the end of February), high-end cameras (B&H pricing in September outclasses Amazon year-round).
The unifying logic: Prime Day exists to drive Prime memberships and Amazon’s ecosystem. Black Friday exists for retailers to clear physical inventory at coordinated MAP exemption windows. The categories the event is structurally optimized for get the real discounts. The categories that exist on Amazon as third-party listings are competing for the same customer in both events and the November competition runs hotter.

What’s getting 30%+ off vs 5%
Prime Day 2025’s headline numbers looked great in aggregate. Apparel hit 24% off (a record), electronics 23%, toys 19%, TVs 18%, appliances 17%, computers 13%, sporting goods 11%. The aggregate hides the distribution. Within “electronics” the discount range was roughly 5% to 73%, and the 30%+ tier was almost entirely Amazon hardware or Amazon-controlled bundles.
The 30%+ tier in July 2025 included: Echo Auto (73% off), Echo Buds (68%), Blink Video Doorbell bundles (64%), Echo Show 8 (50%), Fire TV Stick 4K (42%), Kindle Paperwhite (35%), Ring Battery Doorbell bundles (50%+).
The 5 to 15% tier was: MacBook Air, iPad Air, Sony WH-1000XM6, Bose QuietComfort Ultra, current-gen Samsung and LG OLED TVs, KitchenAid stand mixers, Dyson vacuums, Vitamix blenders, all current-generation Apple Watch and AirPods, premium gaming laptops from Razer and ASUS, and effectively all DSLR or mirrorless camera bodies above $1,000.
In other words, the distribution is bimodal. Either you are buying Amazon’s own product line at a serious discount, or you are buying a premium third-party product at a token discount that exists mostly to justify the event banner. There is very little 25 to 35% middle, and the middle that exists is mostly in smart home accessories, Kasa and TP-Link smart plugs, basic Wyze cameras, mid-range robot vacuums from generation-old SKUs.
Prime Day 2 in October: usually the better window
Amazon launched Prime Big Deal Days in October 2022 to capture pre-Black-Friday holiday spend before Target and Walmart could. Adobe forecast the October 2025 event at $9 billion in spend, up 6.2% from 2024. The discounts skew slightly different from July.
October Prime Day’s structural quirk: it sits between two MAP exemption windows (Amazon’s own and the broader retail Black Friday window two to three weeks later), so manufacturers are less willing to grant deep cuts because it would undercut the November sale they have already committed to. That means October Prime Day is usually shallower than July on third-party items, but identical or slightly better than July on Amazon’s first-party hardware (because that hardware does not depend on MAP authorization).
The practical implication. If you missed something in July, October is mostly equal-to-or-worse on third-party stuff and approximately identical on Amazon-made products. The exception is fall-specific seasonal categories (heaters, humidifiers, air purifiers, early Christmas lighting), which Amazon weights more heavily in October to ride the seasonal lift. If you are gift shopping for the holidays and want to be done early, October Prime Day is the right anchor date. The risk of a meaningfully lower Black Friday price three to four weeks later exists but is smaller than most shoppers assume, and the time and stress savings are real.
The contrarian take
Prime Day is not a sale. It is a Prime membership renewal event with discounts attached as proof-of-work. Every category Amazon discounts deeply, you can trace back to ecosystem leverage: Echo for Alexa queries, Fire TV for ad inventory, Ring for the home-security data graph, Kindle for the publishing flywheel, eero because Wi-Fi telemetry is valuable. Categories outside the ecosystem get token discounts because the event is not really about them.
This is not a complaint. It is the most useful framing we know. Prime Day is the best four-day window of the year to buy Amazon’s first-party hardware. It is a mediocre window for almost everything else, and a worse-than-Black-Friday window for the big-ticket items most shoppers actually want. Treat it like a category-specific event, ignore the headline numbers, and check Keepa before every click over $50. The math gets a lot simpler when you stop pretending Prime Day is a general sale.
