The categories that actually drop on Black Friday
Not every tech category gets a real discount on Black Friday. After tracking the same SKUs across multiple years and cross-referencing Adobe Analytics, Reddit r/buildapcsales, Wirecutter post-mortems, and our own Keepa charts, we keep landing on the same four to six categories where Black Friday produces genuine yearly lows.
1. 4K TVs in the 55” to 75” range
This is the canonical Black Friday category and it still earns its reputation. TV manufacturers (TCL, Hisense, Vizio, Sony, LG, Samsung) build inventory specifically for November and price-anchor against Black Friday. Mid-tier models in 55” to 75” sizes routinely see 30% to 45% off MSRP, and the lows hit on Black Friday morning, not during the week before.

4. Streaming sticks, smart speakers, and Amazon first-party hardware
Black Friday is the lowest-priced day of the year for Roku, Amazon Echo, Fire TV, and Google TV hardware, and it’s not close. The Echo Show 5 routinely hits $35, the Roku Ultra falls under $60, and Fire TV Sticks drop to $20.

5. Gaming peripherals (but maybe wait until Cyber Monday)
Mid-tier gaming gear (Logitech G Pro X Superlight, Razer DeathAdder V3, SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7, Keychron keyboards) drops 25% to 40% during BF/CM week, but historically Logitech’s deepest cuts land on Cyber Monday, not Friday. Razer is the opposite: usually Friday morning.

How to spot a fake Black Friday discount
Roughly one in three “Black Friday deals” isn’t actually a deal. CNBC’s coverage of Black Friday 2025 cited research that 36% of items on sale were no lower than they’d been between October 27 and November 17. The savings on the price tag are real. The savings versus what you would’ve paid two weeks earlier are not.
Three tools, all free, all installable in five minutes:

If the line is flat all year and only dips during “Prime Day” and “Black Friday,” that’s the real price floor. If the chart shows the current “sale” price was the same in August, walk away.

- Honey or Rakuten (browser extension). Useful for coupon stacking, less useful for price history. Don’t rely on it alone.
The standard fake-deal patterns to watch for:
- MSRP inflation. The item lists at $399 with “$200 off.” Keepa shows it sold for $199 all summer. The MSRP is theatrical.
- “Storefront” items on Amazon. Brand names you’ve never heard of, photos that don’t match the listing, suspicious 5-star reviews from one-time accounts. These products are built for sales and often ship in a different SKU than the reviews refer to.
- Bundle inflation. “Save $300 when you buy the TV plus soundbar plus mount.” The soundbar is a $40 product marked at $200.
- The Black-Friday-only model number. Mentioned above for TVs, also common with vacuums, headphones, and air fryers. If reviewers haven’t seen it, neither should you.
Black Friday vs Cyber Monday: when to wait
This is the question we get most, and the honest answer is “it depends on the category.” Here’s the breakdown we use.
Buy on Black Friday when:
- The item is a door-buster TV, robot vacuum, or smart speaker (these sell out before Monday).
- The discount is from a big-box retailer (Best Buy, Target, Walmart) and inventory is finite.
- The item is a category where Friday traditionally beats Monday: Razer peripherals, Hisense and TCL TVs, Bose audio, anything LG.
Wait until Cyber Monday when:
- The deal is Amazon-only and the item is in stock (Amazon usually re-discounts on Monday).
- The brand is Logitech, Anker, or any DTC company that runs its biggest sale on Monday.
- The category is apparel, software, subscriptions, or anything digital.
Don’t wait past Cyber Monday for any tech. If you missed it, the price won’t get better until late January (post-holiday clearance) or the spring refresh. The “December deal” myth is largely myth.

Five categories to never buy on Black Friday
This is the section nobody writes because it’s bad for affiliate revenue. Here it is anyway.
1. Current-generation iPhones, iPads, and AirPods Pro
Apple does not discount its current lineup meaningfully on Black Friday. The $50 Amazon gift card “with purchase” promo is the bottom of what you’ll see, and the actual savings vs. buying from Apple direct (with their education discount, refurb store, or a carrier trade-in) is often negative. If you want a current iPhone or iPad, buy refurbished from Apple directly in January, or wait for the carrier promos in March.
The exception: previous-generation iPad (the cheap one) often hits $250. That’s a real deal.
2. Console releases from the prior 12 months
A console launched in late 2025 or early 2026 will not be cheaper on Black Friday 2026 than it was at launch. Sony and Nintendo barely discount current consoles for 18 to 24 months after release. The “deal” you’ll see is usually a $20 gift card with purchase, which is fine but not a sale. Wait until the platform matures, or buy whenever you actually want to play it. Game prices themselves do drop, especially first-party titles and yearly sports games.
3. Premium kitchen appliances
Vitamix, Breville, KitchenAid stand mixers, espresso machines over $500: these brands run their best discounts in May (Mother’s Day) and June (Father’s Day and Prime Day), not November. The Black Friday “deal” on a Breville Barista Express is usually the same price it was on Prime Day. We’ve watched the same espresso machine sit at $599 from October through January for three years running.
4. Smartwatches launched after September
If a smartwatch launched in the last 90 days, it will not be discounted on Black Friday. Apple Watch Series 10 at launch? Full price. Garmin Fenix 8? Full price. Wait six months or buy the previous generation, which often hits 40% off.
5. Amazon storefront items with no recognizable brand
This is the most important one. If the brand on the Amazon listing is a string of capital letters you can’t pronounce, the photos look slightly off, and the reviews are clustered in three-week bursts, the product is built for Black Friday traffic. Suction numbers, mAh ratings, “lumens,” “watts,” everything on the spec sheet is inflated. The product will arrive, mostly work for six months, then die. We’ve returned more of these in the last two years than we want to think about.
Stick to brand names that have a real website, real customer service, and a real warranty. Anker, Govee, Eufy, Hue, Aqara, Logitech, Roku, Amazon, Sonos, Bose. If you’ve never heard of the brand and it’s only sold on Amazon, walk away no matter how good the percent-off looks.
How to actually plan your 2026 Black Friday
A workflow that takes about 30 minutes and saves more than a “deal newsletter” subscription ever will:
- By August, write down the 3 to 5 tech items you’re actually planning to buy this year. Not “things that would be nice.” Items you’d buy at full price in March.

- Black Friday morning (online, before 9 AM ET), check your alerts. Buy or move on.
- Cyber Monday afternoon, sweep up anything you missed on Friday. Don’t add new items unless they were on your August list.
The discipline is the entire game. People who lose money on Black Friday are people who didn’t have a list and bought things they didn’t need at “70% off” prices that were no lower than July. People who win are the ones who knew exactly what they wanted in August and bought three of those five things in November.
The contrarian take we’ll defend
Black Friday is no longer the best shopping day of the year for most tech. Prime Day (July), the spring smart-home sales (April), and Amazon’s “Big Deals” event in October all produce competitive prices in specific categories. The reason Black Friday still matters is the breadth: it’s the one day where almost every retailer hits real lows on at least some inventory.
